Montepulciano d’Abruzzo, not to be confused with Vino Nobile di Montepulciano produced in Tuscany, was the first wine in the region to gain the DOC label in 1986 and Montepulciano d’Abruzzo Collina Teramane is still today  the only wine to be awarded a DOCG label in Abruzzo.

Montepulciano grape variety has been grown in this area since ancient times and still to this day is an emblem for the region. Another iconic grapevine variety is Trebbiano d’Abruzzo, a white wine gaining notable results with both young and long-lived wines.

Tourism

Thanks to its location between the Adriatic sea and the massifs of the Gran Sasso d’Italia, this area benefits from a considerable temperature range between day and night which, in conjunction with good ventilation, guarantees the vines an ideal microclimate to vegetate and produce grapes of an extraordinary quality.

Despite the delicious regional cuisine and the excellent quality of its wines, Abruzzo is still barely known. Abruzzo is still too often recognised only for its highland and protected areas, but not for its food and wine heritage.

It is only recently that food and wine tourism have started growing in this area, a concept that mixes food and wines together with the beauty of uncontaminated landscapes. Many wineries are building their own farm holidays, giving the chance to experience a unique mix of nature, food and wine tasting in a completely relaxed and charming atmosphere.

You can have a unique experience here in a calm and, for many, unknown destination where you can taste delicacies that only a few people have ever tried such as the arrosticini di vitello (veal cooked on a spit), confetti di Sulmona (sugar coated almonds), Canestrato di Castel del Monte (pecorino cheese / sheep cheese), dolce Parrozzo (a traditional cake) and the typical Zafferano d’Aquila (saffron coming from L’Aquila).
