At Tenuta Santa Maria Valverde we are committed to our mission of creating the world’s most memorable Amarone red wine experience. Join us at the cellar: we are in the hearth of hight Classic Valpolicella, where you can enjoy one of the best view on Garda’s Lake and Tuscan-Emilian Appennini mountains.
Valpolicella, one of the most prestigious wine-making regions in Italy, has been dedicated to wine-making since ancient times is located in the eastern part of Veneto, between Verona and Lake Garda, with its boundary demarcated to the north by the Lessini mountains. The area is characterised by a series of valleys crossed by ‘progni’ - small, torrential water courses - and is steeped in history and culture; apart from attractive rural panoramas, visitor to the area will easily chance upon ancient parish churches, Renaissance villas and important examples of rural architecture.
This cellar is a unique place where the passions of wine, cycling and food are celebrated and blended. At Tenuta Santa Maria Valverde you can taste wines, enjoy a snack or an espresso drink, and embark on a world-class cycling excursion, all in the heart of Valpolicella.
The Santa Maria Valverde tasting room is located at Tenuta in Valpolicella, just north-east of downtown Verona. No appointments are necessary for general tastings. Appointments required for our wine pairing and groups of 3 or more. We offer several unique tasting experiences at Tenuta. We also invite you to visit us for a glass of wine Amarone, a delicious snack or just to browse our wide selection of merchandise. Our outdoor garden patio is a fantastic place to enjoy a bottle of wine and a tasty bite off our tipical Venezian food snack.
Our love of wine Amarone is linked to a love of adventure. The journey toward becoming vintners began years ago in hight Valpolicella, where a long day of cycling ended with a leisurely meal and a great bottle of wine. Today, we seek to recreate those inspiring moments with our wines Amarone.
Amarone is a red wine where the grape-drying process known as ‘appassimento’ is one of the defining and most delicate phases in the production of this wine. Selected bunches of Corvina Veronese, Rondinella and Oseleta, harvested between late September and early October, are laid out in crates and left to dry in well-ventilated facilities. The drying process can last from 100 to 120 days. During this period of ‘active dormancy’, the grapes lose between 40% - 50% of their original weight and undergo a complex chemical transformation that yields an elegant, velvety wine with an aroma of raisined grapes. During this period, genes are activated in the grapes that control the production of the aromas and substances that give Amarone its unmistakeable flavour and bouquet.
